It’s safe to say I’ve always loved the idea of making an occasion of pampering myself and others. As a child I would shut myself in the bathroom to take all my dolls to the hairdressers and beauty salons for hours on end (something my four year old daughter now does?!). Through my early teens there were pop up pamper nights and face mask parties and as I got a bit older spa weekends, hen parties and so on. Even now, whenever I’m asked, I naturally assume everyone would want a spa treatment as a gift for…. let’s be honest, any occasion!
What I hadn’t factored in, was that in the more recent years, the reason that I looked forward to these evenings, days, weekends so much, the reason I felt they were so ‘needed’ was the fact that, aside from these special occasions I wasn’t prioritising the ‘me’ time that these occasions provided. Yes, I did have nice products, but I would use them all quickly before running out of the door or falling into bed.
One of the biggest changes I have recently made is to be much more intentional about my self-care, almost create an occasion each day for me. I would actively encourage everyone to do this. It doesn’t have to be a long soaking bath, (though of course that would be lovely and should be factored in where possible), but just a time when you shut the bathroom door, leave your phone alone and create your own little ritual, hey if you’ve got time even light a candle.
Once I had got into this routine, I didn’t actually feel I needed an evening or weekend away as much, I could create these moments to pause myself which in itself was quite liberating (empowerment wise and financially).
Naturally as things are at the moment we can’t get away and a spa break feels a millions miles away so I urge you to create your own! Use this time to really understand your skin, what it needs and how best to look after it. Have a shop in your bathroom cabinets, get out things you bought a while ago but never had time to try, read the backs of the bottles and jars, apply it all the way it’s advised, really get the most out of them. Use this time to create your new habit and factor in those luxury parts, the facemasks, the body scrubs, whatever your treat is, find a way to make these part of your weekly or monthly routine too! Go on….spa where ever you are! You won’t regret it 😊
